Benjamin Fielder is an awkward, sensitive teenager from Los Angeles whose impending bar mitzvah is turning into a massive, extravagant affair dictated by his image-conscious parents, Adam and Christine. They are determined to outdo the over-the-top bar mitzvah of Benjamin's cousin, Zach Stein, a rival family. As the pressure mounts and the celebration veers further away from any spiritual meaning, Benjamin hopes to invite his estranged, bohemian grandfather, Irwin Fielder, to the event. Irwin, a former Hollywood producer, lives an unconventional life and represents everything Adam has tried to distance himself from. The film is a comedic yet heartfelt exploration of family dynamics, cultural traditions, generational clashes, and the true meaning of coming of age.
