The series follows the struggles and triumphs of the Evans family, an African American family living in the Cabrini-Green public housing projects of inner-city Chicago. Florida and James Evans strive to provide for their three children—J.J., a talented but mischievous artist; Thelma, the intelligent and ambitious daughter; and Michael, the youngest and outspoken activist—amidst poverty and social challenges. Despite their difficult circumstances, the family maintains a strong sense of humor, resilience, and deep familial love. The show often tackles serious social issues of the time, including unemployment, discrimination, and gang violence, but balances them with heartfelt moments and the humorous dynamics of a close-knit family striving for a better life.
