Dr. Joel Fleischman, a neurotic and recently graduated New York City physician, finds his plans for a prestigious career in a big city dashed when he discovers that the terms of his medical school scholarship require him to serve for four years in the remote, eccentric Alaskan town of Cicely. Initially dismayed by the rustic surroundings and the quirky, independent-minded locals, Joel struggles to adapt to a life without Broadway shows, deli sandwiches, or reliable cellular service. The series explores his gradual integration into the community, his interactions with its colorful inhabitants—including the philosophical bush pilot Maggie O'Connell, the wise former astronaut Maurice Minnifield, and the DJ Chris Stevens who waxes poetic on air—and his reluctant appreciation for the unique charm and spiritual essence of Cicely, as he learns to embrace the unexpected journey of his life.
