Dr. Sydney Hansen, a successful plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, finds her life abruptly changed when her eccentric and overbearing mother, Lynda, dies unexpectedly. Feeling unfulfilled and burdened by unresolved family issues, Sydney impulsively returns to her quirky hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, to take over her late mother's chaotic family practice. She moves in with her emotionally distant veterinarian father, Jim, and her dysfunctional siblings, a promiscuous younger sister and a troubled older brother. The series uniquely features Sydney often engaging in surreal conversations with her deceased mother, who appears as a ghost, offering unsolicited advice and witty commentary on Sydney's life, as she attempts to mend her family, rediscover her own purpose, and find love in her complicated new reality.
