Inspired by a true legend, the series follows James Capen Adams, a frontiersman from the 1850s who, after being wrongly accused of a crime, flees civilization and takes refuge in the unforgiving wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. There, he builds a secluded cabin and forms an extraordinary bond with a grizzly bear cub he rescues and raises, naming him Ben. Adams develops a unique connection with various wild animals, becoming a gentle and wise figure respected by both creatures and the few humans he encounters. The show depicts his simple yet challenging life in harmony with nature, his encounters with hunters, trappers, and Native Americans, and his efforts to protect the wildlife and the pristine environment he calls home.
