Hope arrives in the form of a message from the distant planet Iscandar, offering a device called the Cosmo-Cleaner D, capable of neutralizing the radiation. The remaining Earth Defense Force transforms the sunken World War II battleship Yamato into the space battleship Argo (or Yamato), equipped with a powerful Wave Motion Gun. Led by Captain Avatar (Juzo Okita), a diverse crew embarks on a perilous 148,000 light-year journey to Iscandar and back, battling the relentless Gamilas forces led by Leader Desslok, facing internal conflicts, and overcoming immense challenges in their desperate race against time to save humanity.
